The Russian journalist, politician, publicist and writer Ariadna Tyrkova-Williams’s life and work were shaped by some of the most cataclysmic wars and revolutions of the twentieth century. From her central role in the Russian liberal movement and women’s liberation prior to the October Revolution, to her work in anti-Bolshevik émigré organisations during the Russian Civil War and beyond, Tyrkova-Williams was a tireless advocate for social and political change. Although her literary work has won few accolades, her journalism – particularly during the civil war – provides a unique perspective on a period of immense upheaval and transformation.
