Born on 8 March 1913, in the Algerian village of Tizi Hibel, 129 km east of Algiers, Mouloud Feraoun (Mouloud Aït-Chabane) became a literary intellectual and eventual martyr of the Algerian revolution. He was assassinated by the OAS (Organisation de l’armée secrète [Organization of the Secret Army]), a pro-French-Algeria terrorist group against self-determination, with five of his colleagues at Château Royal in Algiers on 15 March 1962, three days before the formalization of the Evian Accords. Feraoun’s parents stressed the importance of an education at a young age, even during a time when most Muslims did not have the means nor the opportunity to gain an education at the primary level.
