The novels of Tierno Monénembo (the pen name of Thierno Saïdou Diallo) often deal with the relationship of his native Guinea to the wider world. Some recount life in the villages of Guinea, some tell of his personal experiences as a political exile, some are based on the history of Guinea from the time of colonial rule, some on what has happened to Guineans in France or in the New World. All his work has been published by Editions du Seuil, in Paris, and he has been awarded major literary prizes. Some of his work has been translated into English.
Monénembo was born in 1947 in Porédaka. He fled from the Sékou Touré regime in 1969, walking through the bush to Senegal. He then went from Senegal to the Ivory Coast to study; he left for France in 1973, and obtained a doctorate in
