Guthrie Edward Melville Wilson, born in Palmerston North, New Zealand, on 8th November 1914, was the second of the three sons of Nellie May (née Stallard) and George Guthrie Wilson. Descended from Irish bush farmers, George Wilson was a commercial traveller, and later, partner in a seed and grain merchant business. Nellie came from what classed as “landed gentry” in the province.
