Józef Szajna (1922—2008) was a noted Polish avant-garde visual artist, scenographer, and stage director. He was a leading member of Poland’s post-World War II theatrical establishment: a prolific designer; the artistic director of several major theaters; the creator of a major body of visually-driven

productions; and long the head of the scenography program at Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts (ASP). As a scenographer, Szajna designed a long list of Polish and European plays, both classical and contemporary.
