Shahriar Mandanipour is a prolific Iranian novelist, short story writer, essayist, children’s book author, and editor who has been a major force on the literary and cultural scene in Iran for decades. His ability to publish his politically critical writing has often been curtailed by government censorship under the Islamic Republic’s various leaders. His major international breakthrough came with the auto-fictional novel
Censoring an Iranian Love Story(2009).
Mandanipour was born in 1957 in Shiraz, Iran. After attending primary and secondary school there, he moved to Tehran in 1975 to study Political Science at Tehran University. He was in Tehran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which was a formative experience that set the stage for the intense emotional character of his writing.
