Born in Santiago, Chile in 1949 to a middle-class family, Diamela Eltit studied pedagogy and literature at the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. The 1973 Chilean coup d’état and subsequent dictatorship (1973-1990) led by General Augusto Pinochet had a considerable impact on Eltit’s formation as an artist and a writer.
