Lucian Pintilie was a Romanian film and theatre director, widely recognized for his politically disruptive cinema. His films were banned in Romania between 1970 and 1989, and he spent most of that period in exile, working in theatre and opera in France and the United States. In 1990, he returned to Romania, where he made eight of the twelve films that comprise his cinematographic work.
Alongside Liviu Ciulei, Pintilie was one of the rare Romanian directors to achieve international notoriety before 1989. His 1969 film Reconstituirea [Reconstruction] remains legendary – an audacious, uncompromising work, marking the “year zero of Romanian cinema” (Nasta; 2013: 94) which, although banned soon after release, would re-emerge almost 20 years later and prove crucial for the formation of
