Artemidorus' Works

Little is known about the life of Artemidorus, save that he is said to be a native of Daldis in Lydia, as mentioned in the

Suda

(a tenth-century Byzantine lexicon). However, the entry also purports that the same Artemidorus wrote a work on palmistry, which is perhaps doubtful (White, 1975, p. 7). From the dedications in his five books of

Oneirocritica

, a study of dream interpretation, we can ascertain that Artemidorus lived in the second century AD, a time in which the Hellenic world was reinvigorated under the Roman Empire, particularly under the emperor Hadrian. Living in the Roman Empire, he would have benefitted from the opportunities for travel and intellectual thought across the Empire and in a range of scientific and philosophical disciplines.
