Diodorus Siculus was a universal historian from Agyrium (now Agira, in Sicily), author of the
Bibliothēkē Historikē(‘Historical Library’), which details events from mythological times up to 60 BC. He originally aimed to cover events up to 46 BC, but for unknown reasons ended in the year 60. Perhaps the risk of writing contemporary history during the difficult period of Caesar’s Civil War led him to be cautious.
Diodorus was a Greek historian who wrote in Greek under Roman rule. He was influenced by Greek political and philosophical thought, but was also interested in the nature and success of empires; he developed this theme, which is appropriate to a ‘universal’ history, as an observer of Roman imperialism.
