Luigi Groto was one of the most prolific poets, playwrights, actors and stage directors of the sixteenth century, despite the fact that he was completely blind, as demonstrated by his nickname,
“Cieco di Hadria”(the Blind Man of Adria).
Groto was born in the small city of Adria, located between Venice, Padua and Ferrara, three important literary and cultural centers. He lost his sight when he was only eight days old, and then he lost his father three years later. Despite his handicap, his mother was able to secure his education, probably because the young boy was blessed with an extraordinary memory.
