The first Persian historical novel,

Shams va Toghra

[Shams and Toghra], was written by Mohammad Baqer Mirza (1850-1919) under the pen name Khosravi. The author, who was a direct descendant of Fath Ali Shah Qajar (r. 1797-1834), lived most of his life in his hometown of Kermanshah in a well to do, but not princely rich, family, under the tutelage of his father. Khosravi was given a traditional education and was well versed in Arabic, the religious sciences and literature. After his father’s death he worked for five years at the telegraph station in Kermanshah, and several years later the governor of the province, Ala od-Dowle, made Khosravi head of his secretariat, and brought in 1901 his employee with him on a travel to Fars, where Khosravi had time to visit and study the historical…
