Morteza Moshfeq Kazemi was from a family of ministerial officials. His father was employed in the ministry of finance and a very religious man, and his grandfather was an accountant at the Qajar court (rule 1797-1925). Moshfeq Kazemi was educated at home, as well as in private schools, among others the Alliance Française, and in the

Dar ol-Fonun

(Polytechnic school), before he travelled to both Berlin and France for further studies. In Berlin he was part of the circle of Iranian nationalist intellectuals who advocated reform and the “Westernization” of Iran. There Moshfeq Kazemi was the editor of the newspaper
