Goliarda Sapienza was an Italian writer and actress. Now increasingly considered a major figure in twentieth-century Italian literature, she was long ignored and marginalized during her life. Her literary production spans genres and forms, encompassing novels, short stories, poetry and plays, and is characterized by a highly innovative and subversive attitude towards artistic conventions and social norms.
Sapienza lived a troubled and eccentric life. She was born in 1924 in Catania, Sicily, daughter of Maria Giudice, one of the most prominent members of the Italian Socialist Party and a feminist activist, and Peppino Sapienza, a socialist comrade and a lawyer.
