Romolo Fioroni was an Italian author and researcher of the epic
maggio, a form of folk theater typical of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The tradition’s origin is unknown and itsearliest extant written sources, dating back to the late eighteenth century, already refer to it as an
antichissima tradizione[very ancient tradition] (Aravecchia 100). The nonprofessional actors, called
maggiarini, stage stories inspired mainly by medieval and Renaissance chivalric romances; in addition, there are dramas about regional or national history as well as the lives of saints and martyrs.
Romolo Fioroni grew up in Costabona, a small mountain village located in the province of Reggio Emilia, where the epic maggio was performed almost every summer by the local Compagnia di Costabona across several
