Tiziano Terzani was an Italian journalist and writer who covered Asia for Italian and German newspapers between the 1970s and the early 2000s. He was born in Florence in 1938, and his modest family – his father was a lathe turner, his mother a milliner (Loreti, 7-8) – had to endure sacrifices to put him through school. Despite the difficulties, Terzani obtained a scholarship for the prestigious Scuola Normale in Pisa, where he graduated in law in 1961. Soon afterwards, a brief period of study in Leeds was interrupted because of financial constraints.
