Born in 1973, poet and essayist Shadab Zeest Hashmi spent her early years in Peshawar, and later migrated to the United States, where she studied, married, and now lives and works. She has written four books of poetry and essays. Her first collection of poems,

The Baker of Tarifa,

is about the Convivencia, or Muslim Arab rule in Spain, and won the 2011 San Diego Book Award for Poetry.

Kohl and Chalk

, personal poems as well as experiments with the ghazal in English, was published in 2013;

Ghazal Cosmopolitan

, a compilation of essays, ghazal and qasida in English which came out in 2017, was showcased as the “book of the month” at San Diego Central Library; and

Comb

, a hybrid memoir combining lyric essay, poems, and illustration, was published in 2020, having won the 2019 Hybrid Book…
