Humayun Ahmed, one of the most popular fiction writers in Bangladesh, made a substantial contribution to Bengali novels, short stories, films, and television dramas. He published more than two hundred and fifty books of fiction and non-fiction, composed songs, wrote screenplays, directed and produced films, and made TV dramas. He was also a teacher of Chemistry at the University of Dhaka, but resigned to devote his time to writing full-time. In terms of popularity and range of works, very few writers can match him. Kaiser Haq comments: “Humayun Ahmed created literary history by becoming the most popular novelist of our time in Bengali” (i).
