Sufia Kamal was born on 20 June 1911 in the Nawab family of Shayestabad, Barisal, East Bengal, in undivided India. Her mother was Nawabzadi Sabera Khatun and her father, Syed Abdul Bari, was a lawyer, linguist, devotee of metaphysics and follower of Sufism.

Inspired by the literary magazines and books she read at home, Kamal’s literary career began at the age of twelve with the publication of her first short story, “Sainik Bodhu” (A Soldier’s Wife), in the magazine Toroon (Youth). It was followed by the publication of her first poem at the age of fifteen, “Bashanti” (Of Spring) in Saogat, edited by Mohammad Nasiruddin.
