A powerful short story writer, Hasan Azizul Huq contributed enormously to Bangladeshi fiction. He traversed at ease from Rarh Bangla – a region between the Chota Nagpur Plateau on the west and the Ganges Delta on the east – to Bangladesh as he explored the lives of the marginalized and brought them into focus in his fictional vista. A strong proponent of realism in literature, Huq was committed to that famous tenet of William Dean Howells: “realism is nothing more and nothing less than the truthful treatment of material”. He derived his material from his rural beginnings and closeness to nature.
