In 1962, a remarkable young man with “large, expressive eyes” and sharp intellect enrolled in the Bengali Department of the University of Dhaka but left within a few years without a degree (Zafar 25-26). Apparently, Professor Ahmed Sharif, a legendary scholar and intellectual, had scolded him, and the protégé was so deeply offended by his favourite professor’s remarks that he decided to quit (Hasin 470).
