Sophie von La Roche (1730-1807) is one of the most famous German women authors of the eighteenth century. She composed an extensive body of work that includes novels, such as
Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim[
The History of Lady Sophia Sternheim], moral narratives, travel journals, pedagogical letters, autobiographical works, memoirs, and the journal
Pomona. Her works focus on topics such as how one should lead one’s life and how to achieve education, virtue, and happiness (especially as
a woman).
Marie Sophie von La Roche, née Gutermann, was born on December 6, 1730, as the daughter of the protestant physician Georg Friedrich Gutermann and his wife Regina Barbara, née Unold, in Kaufbeuren. She spent most of her childhood in Augsburg, where her father was Dean of the College of
