Nurul Momen (1908-1990) was a dynamic man who worked against orthodoxy, moving effortlessly through various fields of knowledge and activities – he was a poet, dramatist, essayist, sportsman, football coach, actor, lawyer, and teacher. From an early age he read books from the family library and at eleven years old he began his literary career with the poem “Shondhya” [Evening], following the versification of Rabindranath Tagore’s “Shonar Tori” [The Golden Boat] (1894). Momen’s poem was published in a famous literary magazine,

On 25 November 1908, Momen was born to an elite family in Faridpur. His father was a zamindar and a homeopathic doctor. After completing his school and college education, he entered the newly created Dhaka
