Oddur Einarsson was a scholar and religious leader, born in Möðruvallasel close to the Hólar diocese on 31 August 1559. His father was the famous religious poet Einar Sigurðsson in Nes in Aðaldal, and Oddur was his oldest son by his first wife. His much younger brother was poet and priest Ólafur Einarsson of Kirkjubær, whose son was the poet Stefán Ólafsson. Oddur’s parents were impoverished at the time of his birth and it was probably only through connections with the 

officialis

at Möðruvellir monastery and Guðbrandur Þorláksson, headmaster at Hólar and later bishop of Hólar, that young Oddur received an education.

Oddur was educated at Hólar and went to study in Copenhagen from 1583 to 1585. Among other things, he studied mathematics and astronomy and is known to
