Popular prize-winning novelist Nathacha Devi Pathareddy Appanah, known as Nathacha Appanah (and who formerly published under the name of Nathacha Appanah-Mouriquand), was born in Mahebourg, a Southern Mauritian village, on 24 May 1973. Her family is of traditional South Indian (Telugu) origin. Her mother is a retired primary school teacher and is the only immediate family member who reads her work. In an interview, Appanah reveals that her parents had different career plans for her as “for them writing is not a real profession” and since “Mauritius is a conservative and traditional society, other people’s opinions are very important and now [her] parents’ friends and people in society describe [her] as a writer” (Rice 2007).
