The Icelandic children’s books author and educator, Hreiðar Stefánsson, was born in Akureyri on 3 June 1918. Hreiðar was educated as a teacher, graduating in 1942. He then ran a school for small children in Akureyri from 1942 to 1963. In 1963 he moved to Reykjavík and taught in Langholtsskóli for more than twenty years. He married Jenna Jensdóttir who taught with him at both schools and was also an author.

Hreiðar and Jenna co-authored more than twenty books, although the most popular series, about the orphan girl Adda, was later revealed to have been written only by Jenna. In her old age, she suggested that she and Hreiðar never actually wrote together but preferred to credit all their works to both.
