François Tristan L’Hermite, known as Tristan L’Hermite, was born in 1601 at the Château de Soliers in the French region of La Haute Marche. Tristan hails from a moderately wealthy landowning family whose history can be traced back to at least the construction of the Château de Soliers by his grandfather Jean L’Hermite in 1424. 150 years later, Jean L’Hermite was confirmed the Lord of Soliers before his marriage to Jeanne de La Roche-Aymon. Later documents reveal a sordid scandal: Tristan’s father, Pierre L’Hermite, was involved in a political murder and sentenced to death on 18 February 1595.
