The Icelandic poet and folklorist Theodóra Friðrika Guðmundsdóttir Thoroddsen was born at Kvennabrekka in the Dalasýsla county of Iceland on 1 July 1863, daughter of Katrín Ólafsdóttir Sívertsen and the priest and parliamentarian Guðmundur Einarsson. In 1884, she married her second cousin Skúli Thoroddsen, later an editor and political leader, and together they had 13 children. They lived in Ísafjörður in the Vestfirðir (Westfjords) region of Iceland, where Skúli was the local sýslumaður [magistrate], before first moving to Bessastaðir in 1899, and to Reykjavík in 1908. Skúli died in 1916, leaving Theodóra a widow with 12 children.
