Sigurður the Blind is a relatively obscure Icelandic poet, known as the author of
Rósa, a religious skaldic
drápaconsisting of 133 stanzas in the
hrynhentmetre which exists in two manuscripts from the sixteenth century, one of which written in the hand of Gísli Jónsson, later bishop of Skálholt (d. 1587); there it is attributed to “Sigurður blindur” without any explanation about who he was.
Rósais a cosmological poem in the tradition of the famous fourteenth century poem
Lilja, but far less known. Unlike
Lilja, it includes the story of the virgin Mary’s parents, Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, following a fifteenth century trend. Preserved with
Rósain manuscripts is another religious poem,
Milska,which also focuses on the virgin Mary, even more so than
Liljaand
