Þórir Bergsson is the pseudonym of Þorsteinn Jónsson, a banker and Icelandic writer. Þorsteinn was born in 1885 in Hvammur, one of the highest and northernmost farms in Borgarfjörður. Hvammur was a parish and Þorsteinn’s father was the parish priest. Þorsteinn’s younger brother Magnús became a professor of theology and later an influential politician and cabinet minister. When Þorsteinn was three years old, the family, including his mother and younger brother, moved to Mælifell in Skagafjörður in northern Iceland. Þorsteinn’s father was a popular priest in the area, but also an enterprising farmer. He had a large book collection from which his sons must have benefited, but this was not very common in Iceland at the time. Þorsteinn and his brother did not attend…
