Bjarni Gizurarson was an Icelandic poet and Lutheran priest in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Bjarni was born in 1621 and brought up on the farm Þingmúli in the east of Iceland. There he was surrounded by educated people, priests, and poets. His maternal family was full of poets, descendants of the renowned poet Einar Sigurðsson of Eydalir (1538-1626), Bjarni’s grandfather. This group of poets, which Bjarni is considered a member of, is often referred to as

Austfjarðarskáldin,

 making reference to their cultural activity in the fairly secluded Eastfjords region of Iceland.

Bjarni went to study at the bishopric Skálholt in the south of Iceland, but never abroad. After he finished his education, he spent time in Skálholt working as a secretary to the bishop Brynjólfur
