Bergur Sokkason is among the best-known Icelandic authors from the fourteenth century. Not much is known about his personal life, such as his date of birth or death. However, Sverrir Tómasson has suggested that he was born before or in the year 1300 and died before the middle of the fourteenth century (1993, 249). In 1316 or 1317, Bergur became a monk in the monastery at Þingeyrar in the north of Iceland and in 1322 he became a prior in the monastery at Þverá. Before that he had been a student of Lárentínus Kálfsson who later became the bishop of Hólar; in the story of the bishop (Lárentínusar saga) they are said to have been close (Tómasson 2014, 71).
