The late Middle Ages witnessed the rise of many intellectual struggles among humanists, poets, and theologians. Although the major division quickly proved to be the one between the Catholics and the emerging Protestants, there were many other conflicts dealt with by means of textual exchanges. The knight and intellectual Ulrich von Hutten was a major player during those tumultuous years, but many of his works have not yet been studied thoroughly enough, maybe because his many vitriols, bitter confrontations, and even military involvements against authorities made him appear more like a publicist than a learned writer. He is also known as one of the earliest victims of syphilis, about which he composed an impressively detailed and realistic treatise.
