By the age of twenty-eight, the acclaimed Chinese-American author Rebecca F. Kuang had published five novels, winning numerous literary awards including Nebula Award for Best Novel. Born in Guangzhou, one of the most prosperous harbour cities in China, Kuang went to the USA with her parents when she was four. She spent her gap year in China and it was the first time for her to reconnect with her extended family as well as her cultural heritage.

Largely inspired by the experiences of her parents and grandparents, her fantasy trilogy – The Poppy War (2018), The Dragon Republic (2019) and The Burning God (2020) – mirrors the brutal history of the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), the turbulent periods of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949) respectively.
