Ari Jósefsson was born on 28 August 1939 in Blönduós, where he grew up. At fourteen, he began his studies at the Akureyri Junior College, where he published his first poems in school magazines. Ari left junior college and moved to Reykjavík, where he quickly became part of a group of young poets in the city. In 1958 he co-published the magazine

Forspil

alongside poets Dagur Sigurðarson, Jóhann Hjálmarsson, and Þóra Elfa Björnsson, in which he published the short story “Messías” and several literary reviews.

Between 1959 and 1960, Ari resided in Spain, mainly in Barcelona, and continued his studies outside of formal schooling at Reykjavík Junior College, from which he graduated in 1961. That same year, he released his first and only poetry collection, Nei [No]. The
