In light of the high cost, labor, and intellectual effort involved in the creation of medieval manuscripts, it often seems hard to imagine how much medieval writers actually produced. Tragically, as recent calculations have revealed, a vast amount of medieval literature (or simply: texts) has disappeared in the course of time (due to fire, water damage, mice, bookworms, deliberate destruction, cutting up by later book binders who needed padding material for the covers and backs of their books, etc.). Nevertheless, even though we only have available today the tip of the metaphorical iceberg, the sheer number of pre-modern narratives in whatever genre still proves to be simply staggering.
