Born in France to parents from the island of Martinique, Fabienne Kanor is a prolific and provocative author of French literary and cinematic texts whose settings range from the French Caribbean to West and North Africa to France and the United States. Her work contemplates complex contemporary questions of race and gender in these different locations, and her œuvre is continually attentive to the histories of slavery and colonization and their ongoing impacts on individuals and societies today. As a novelist, she has published seven works of fiction to date (2004–2020). As a filmmaker, she has made two fictional films and over ten documentaries, and she is a playwright who has authored theatrical scripts as well.
