In the case of the late medieval Bavarian Ulrich Fuetrer, we face the rather odd situation that a highly respected painter also gained a great reputation as a poet and chronicler. It is unclear whether his artistic skills influenced his abilities as a writer or vice versa, but we must always keep the two sides of his work in mind to gain a good understanding of his accomplishments. In many other contemporary cases, the poets were diplomats (Boccaccio), royal administrators (Chaucer), or medical doctors (Heinrich Steinhöwel), but they did not excel in other arts.
