The juvenile author Daisy Ashford is best known for
The Young Visiters, or, Mr Salteenas Plan, a comic story written in 1890 when she was nine, and published, complete with spelling errors, in 1919. It enjoyed great commercial success and generated high-profile debates about child authorship.
Margaret Mary Julia (Daisy) Ashford was the eldest of the three daughters of a former War Office employee, William Henry Roxburgh Ashford, and his wife Emma Georgina Walker, who had five children from an earlier marriage. Daisy was born at Elm Lodge in Petersham, Surrey. This house, formerly Elm Cottage, had been rented by Charles Dickens in 1839. The Ashford family, who were well-educated Roman Catholics, moved to Lewes, Sussex in 1889, and later to Bexhill. Daisy was educated mainly at home with her
