The remote origins of Alfonso Gatto link him to an old family of small ship owners and seafarers, but his parents were an educated mother of noble birth and a father who worked as a state official. He grew up with seven siblings in Salerno, a southern Italian town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Gatto’s native town figures prominently in his writings even though he spent a very small part of his adult life there, returning to Salerno only for visits or sojourns.
Gatto’s was an itinerant life. In 1926, after his Classical Studies at Salerno’s lyceum, he moved to Naples to attend its university but did not graduate. He subsequently moved among a number of northern and central Italian cities (Milan, Florence, Rome, Bologna, Venice, and other, smaller places in between). Although Milan was
