The philosopher and epistomologist Gaston Bachelard was born on 27 June 1887 in the small French village of Bar-sur-Aube of the Champagne-Ardenne region, to a modest family (his father and grandfather were both clog-makers), and died of leukaemia on 16 October 1962 in Paris, aged 78. His body now lies in the town in which he was born. Gaston Bachelard had a difficult upbringing. An avid reader and a diligent student, his perseverance and passion assured his success. After obtaining the Baccalaureate, Gaston Bachelard first earned his living as a postal worker in the Vosges of Remiremont.
