One of the most inquisitive minds of his time, Roger Bacon had a deep influence on medieval theology, philosophy, and science, but we have to be careful in our assessment of his mindset since he was, despite his many amazingly forward-looking ideas, clearly a medieval man and a devout Christian. He was born in England sometime between 1210 and 1220 near Ilchester in Somerset, or perhaps in Bisley in Gloucestershire, as the son of a wealthy family. Throughout his life he spent an enormous amount of money on books and his experiments. Around 1227 Bacon began his studies at the University of Oxford under Adam of Marsh and Thomas of Wales, focusing on Aristotelian philosophy and mathematics.
