As a prolific poet, novelist, playwright, and essayist, Linda Hogan’s work is centered on the preservation of the environment. Hogan was born in Denver to Charles Henderson (Chickasaw) and Cleona Bower Henderson (white) in 1947. While the family moved frequently because of her father’s army postings, Hogan has always considered her home to be Oklahoma, where her paternal grandparents lived. Her great-grandfather was a member of the Chickasaw legislature and her great-great grandmother was descended from a Chickasaw chief. Her maternal ancestors homesteaded in Nebraska Territory and Hogan draws upon those experiences as well in her writings. She is acutely aware of the difficulties of both Indian and non-Indian working poor, which feature as a constant theme in her writing.
