Vachel Lindsay's lifelong concerns with national unity can be traced to his birth in Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln's hometown. His father, Vachel Thomas Lindsay, was a physician from Kentucky. His mother, Catharine Frazee Lindsay, was active in the Campbellite church and, although also from a southern background, remembered Lincoln with admiration. “Mason and Dixon's line runs straight through our house in Springfield still,” confessed Lindsay, “and straight through my heart.”

For three years, Lindsay attended Hiram College in Ohio; he then began studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. Next, he enrolled in the New York School of Art, where he studied with William M. Chase and Robert Henri. His parents provided financial support reluctantly, and he earned a little
