Edmond Malone was born on 4th October 1741 in Dublin, to Edmund Malone, an MP of the Irish House of Commons and his wife Catherine Collier. In 1757 he attended Trinity College Dublin, where he showed literary promise in his prose translation of Sophocles’

Oedipus Rex

. This was published with an essay arguing for the return of the Greek Chorus in contemporary drama, an early indication of Malone’s inclination toward literary research. In summer 1759, his studies were interrupted by his mother’s declining health, and he was forced to leave Trinity to attend to her. He did not resume his studies until early 1760. During his absence from Trinity, he supplemented his education with private study and, after re-entering the College he received his BA just two years later.
