Florence Marryat, also known by her married names, Mrs. Ross Church and Mrs. Francis Lean, was a popular English sensation novelist, writer, editor, and prominent Spiritualist active during the mid-to-late Victorian era. Besides penning multiple works in other genres, Marryat wrote at least sixty-six novels between 1865 and 1899. Recently, her 1897 vampire novel

The Blood of the Vampire

, which depicts the interracial heiress Harriet Brandt as inadvertently draining Europeans with lethal psychic energy, has received scholarly attention and provoked debate regarding its meaning.
