American author Bobbie Ann Mason was born near rural Mayfield, Kentucky, on May 1, 1940, the eldest daughter or Wilburn and Christy Mason. Soon after her birth, her father left the family dairy farm that he had inherited from his parents to fight in World War II and was one of the lucky to return several years later. Growing up, Mason sensed the tension between her parents over their small life. During the war, Christy worked at a local factory, and on her husband’s return she hoped to expand their land holdings and escape the daily grind of chores on the farm. Wilburn, however, was content to milk the cows each morning and follow in the footsteps of his forbearers who had settled this corner of Kentucky as agriculturalists.
