Edwin Morgan was born in the Scottish city of Glasgow on April 27, 1920, the only child of socially conservative, church-going Presbyterian parents. He was unhappy as a schoolboy, toyed with the idea of leaving early to become a carpenter, but took bursary examinations to complete his schooling with three years at Glasgow High, where he became aware of his homosexuality and where he first started writing, winning prizes in his last school year for English composition, for French and for his prose and verse contributions to the school magazine.
