Andrei Bely (the pseudonym of Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev), born in Moscow on 26 October 1880 (by the Gregorian calendar), was regarded throughout his life as a restless and eccentric spirit. He situated his work at the interface of exact science and art, rationalist philosophy and occultism, pathos and satire. Bely himself stated that the zigzag was his most characteristic trajectory of thought. The zigzag, the abrupt changes of direction, which are typical of his culturological speculations in particular, reveal the influence of the antagonistic family atmosphere in which he was raised.
