Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was born on March 1st, 1812 in London. His parents were, in their own way, a study in contrasts: his mother, Catherine, was the daughter of a wealthy, traditional, and privileged landowning family from Lincolnshire, while his father, Augustus Charles, was a struggling architect who had fled his native France during the Revolution after, according to family legend, having been wounded fighting on behalf of King Louis XVI. The young couple settled in Bloomsbury, able to afford the family home thanks in large part to Catherine’s sizable inheritance.
